501: Introduction to Human Resource Management

Program Overview

The status and range of responsibilities of the human resource management function have increased substantially in recent years. The effective human resource specialist needs to be not only a skilled practitioner, but also a counsellor, negotiator and adviser. This program will develop the skills and knowledge which must be acquired by human resource professionals early in their careers, and to provide the opportunity for line managers to widen their knowledge.

Newly appointed or inexperienced human resource officers or managers and line managers/supervisors who need to increase their knowledge of the human resource function.

• The fundamentals of human resource management – the new human resource role
• Human resource and organisation planning
• Recruitment and selection
• Training and management development
• Staff appraisal (performance and potential reviews, job improvement interviews)
• Employee relations issues
• Manager’s expectations of human resource departments.
